A dated knotty pine fireplace in the living/great room was replaced with soft-toned cultured stone that’s lighter weight than real stone and requires no additional structural support. A bold rustic mantle and accommodations for built-in speakers and a flat-screen TV complete the room’s new focal point.
Durable leather and comfortable chenille seating is arranged to accommodate a houseful of guests, with a bench by the door to take off wet boots or use as an extra seat. New cocktail, side, and console tables with protective glass tops do double duty as storage pieces for games and books. An inexpensive, dark-colored rug adds warmth and texture, yet will withstand rental abuse. Light-filtering shades provide fabric protection and a view from inside out, while grass cloth Roman shades add textural warmth.
Throughout the first floor, baseboard heaters were removed and radiant heating installed. Carpeted stairs to the second floor were replaced with hickory wood and a rustic wrought iron railing. Additional ceiling can lights were added throughout to brighten the entire space.
