Portfolio » Spacious Home Assumes
an Inviting Human Scale

Design Goal

The new owners of a spacious home wanted to take better advantage of beautiful west-facing views of the San Juan Islands and Olympic Peninsula and to transform unused attic space into an expanded master suite retreat. The 1989 home also was in need of a stylistic update and treatments that would add warmth and a more human scale to its generously-sized rooms.

Challenges

The home’s cavernous scale, angled exterior walls, and octagon-shaped living room required architectural changes and appropriate size furnishings to make it feel warm and inviting inside, while taking advantage of spectacular views out the many windows. The owners, however, also wanted to incorporate favorite furnishings from a previous, smaller-scale home.

Designer’s Role

Molly McIntosh of Gracious Living used her intuitive sense of scale and color to complement existing furnishings with new pieces, accessories, textures, and materials that matched the large scale of the home while creating a warm, inviting feel. Imaginative space planning transformed an upstairs master bedroom into an inviting private suite, complete with laundry and kitchenette.

Result

The reconfigured home seems finally to have come into its own, matching its location and impressive scale with an inviting personality in sync with its dramatic surroundings. Natural touches and a minimalist hand created a softened upscale traditional styling perfect for the Pacific Northwest’s relaxed, comfortable way of life.
